Apprenticeship Training Program

The Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP) is a paid, customized 12-month program for DCHA public housing residents or Housing Choice Voucher Program participants that aims to develop the necessary career skills to succeed in the building maintenance industry.

Participants are expected to become a Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) through the program and can earn additional certifications, including certifications in CPR/First Aid/AED and OSHA 30, as well as Sherwin William’s Commercial Painters Certificates.

ATP involves 20 hours of classroom and on-the-job training each week, Monday-Friday from 9 AM-1 PM, including working alongside the DCHA’s Property Management Operations Team as they deliver building maintenance services such as:

  • Carpentry
  • Electrical installation
  • Plumbing
  • Plastering
  • Painting
  • Landscaping

 

In addition to hands-on training and classroom training, participants receive:

• Interviewing guidance, practice, and support

• Resume guidance and writing

Access to Hiring Events with DCHA & the Department of Employment Services (DOES)

Access to Local District Career or Job Fairs

 

 

ELIGIBILITY

ATP Participants must meet the following criteria in order to enroll in ATP:

  • Participant of DCHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) or a resident of DCHA’s Public Housing Program
  • 18 Years Old or Older

 

HOW TO APPLY

DCHA accepts applicants into the program once a year in the fall and new cohorts begin in the winter. The application process is as follows:

STEP 1: Apply by providing your information and selecting an Information Session date using the online application form.

Applications for the 2025 ATP cohort have closed and candidates have been selected! Please check back next year to apply and stay updated by following DCHA on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X.
    • Information Sessions take place online. You only need to attend one Information Session. To sign up to attend an Information Session, click the “Apply for ATP” button above and complete the form.

 

STEP 2: Once submitted, the form is reviewed for eligibility.

  • If you are eligible for the program, you will be sent a text and email with instructions on how to join the virtual Information Session on your selected date.

 

STEP 3: After attending an Information Session, you will then be scheduled for an interview. You will receive a notification of your interview date and time block.

  • Interview time blocks are an hour and held online via Microsoft Teams. You may use a computer (preferred) or a smartphone with the Teams app.

  • Interviews typically take 15-20 minutes, but please be sure you are available for the full hour. For example, if you are scheduled for 1PM-2PM, please be reachable for the interview anytime within that timeframe.
  • Be sure to test your device and the Teams app prior to joining your interview time block.

 

STEP 4: Following the completion of the interview, you will receive a text and email notification that says if you have been accepted into the program.

  • If you have been selected, program staff will also contact you directly to provide next steps for orientation and first day!
