DC Housing Authority youth residents put their athletic skills to the test during a one-day football camp hosted by NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green and nonprofit Green Family Foundation on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Commanders’ legendary cornerback said the event — the DCHA Young Champions Football and Life Skills Camp — was an opportunity for kids to learn good sportsmanship.

“Through this day camp, not only was I able to teach the kids what it takes to play football, but I was also able to use it as an opportunity to teach them important things like resilience and respect toward others,” said Green, whose played for Washington for his entire 20-year NFL career.

The one-day camp was exclusively for DCHA youth residents ages 8-to-18-years-old. The camp included fundamentals, footwork, blocking drills and a chalk talk. The Commanders also provided a boxed lunch, t-shirts and a swag bag with team gear to all DCHA youth attendees.

Along with football drills and life skills conversations, Green also signed autographs and took photos with DCHA families.

Green is considered by many to be one of the greatest cornerbacks to play the game and played on Washington’s championship teams in Super Bowls XXII (January 1988) and XXVI (January 1992). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. The camp took place just one week before a weekend of honors for Green. On Saturday, Oct. 19, he received a Key to the City, a symbol of civic recognition and gratitude that is considered the highest honor an individual can receive from Washington, D.C., and the next day, the Commanders retired his jersey number during a special halftime ceremony.

The Green Family Foundation runs after-school and summer programs for children that focus on academics, friendship and values. Its stated mission is to “help children develop into leaders who positively influence their families and communities
