On Feb. 13, the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) joined nonprofit Seabury Resources for Aging for an Open House at Friendship Terrace, which recently underwent millions of dollars in renovations and with the conversion and preservation of 125 units, established itself as a fully affordable senior living community in Washington, D.C.’s Tenleytown neighborhood.
The 180-unit Friendship Terrace — located at 4201 Butterworth Place NW — has completed the conversion and preservation of 125 previously unassisted elderly residential units to affordable senior housing based on the tenant’s income. The units are subsidized through project-based vouchers, which are administered by DCHA.
Along with offering stable, affordable homes, Seabury at Friendship Terrace has also created a $2 million Food Trust to ensure residents have access to delicious and healthy food.
“Our seniors are the backbone of our community. Through their hard work over the course of their lives, they helped support future generations. With Friendship Terrace, we are supporting them,” said Keith Pettigrew, DCHA Executive Director. “Friendship Terrace is a community that provides seniors with an opportunity to age with independence and dignity. Thank you to HUD, Seabury and the Friendship Terrace residents for your partnership, and thank you to Councilmember Frumin and the Tenleytown community for your support.
Property renovations include adding a first-floor exercise room, modernizing the lobby and dining hall, installing a rooftop cooling tower and solar panels, and refreshing hallways and stairwells.
