WELCOME THE 2014-2017 RESIDENT COUNCILS
Nearly 100 people were sworn in as Resident Council officers at the District of Columbia Housing Authority headquarters on Wednesday, September 3.
The officers, who lead resident associations at DCHA properties, were elected to three-year terms.
“I feel the power in the room,” said DCHA Executive Director Adrianne Todman. “When I see you I feel our power because you all are a force to be reckoned with personally, but certainly in our neighborhoods.”
Todman explained to the crowd, full of familiar names who were re-elected and several new ones, that being a resident leader is not an easy job. She said it takes courage to do what is right for each of the communities that these individuals represent.
“You were elected and with that comes the perks of the job,” Todman said. “But it also comes with responsibility, honesty, and transparency.”
“You become our ears, our eyes, and mouthpieces for the agency and also back to the residents,” said DCHA Chairman of the Board Pedro Alfonso. “We need you to make sure we are in touch and that we are all on the same page.”
Alfonso encouraged the council members to keep up their positive energy throughout their term and said that he and the DCHA staff will support them and provide them with what they need.
The officers will attend a retreat this October where they will learn the ins and outs of their new positions.
