While
the Anacostia River and its community have known their share of economic
struggle and environmental troubles, there is hope on the horizon for
residents as a strong interest has emerged toward reversing the area’s
decline.
Major
redevelopment activities are planned, underway, or completed to revitalize
substantial sections of Anacostia. The work necessary to complete a
makeover into a community of home ownership and rental opportunities
is the community of Frederick Douglas and Stanton Dwellings. The severely
distressed Valley Green/Skytower housing development, reopened in October
2000 as Wheeler Creek. This new community is ideally located to serve
as a gateway to the nation’s Capital.
DCHA
submitted another Hope VI application to the Department of Urban Housing
and Development to redevelop Arthur Capper Family/Senior and Carrollsburg
Dwellings. The $35 million grant was awarded on October 19, 2001.
For
DCHA Anacostia, a region representing 19 public housing developments,
our mission is simple and direct: to provide quality, safe, affordable
housing of choice to our residents and to be a distinctive and successful
member of a premier organization – the District of Columbia Housing
Authority. Our commitment is to the residents we serve – to understand
and to respond sensitively and respectfully to their needs and expectations.
We
look forward to feeding the current of hope flowing through the Anacostia
community and promise to have a profound effect on the quality of life
and economic self-sufficiency of its residents. We are collaboratively
working with the residents, the employees and the communities in DCHA
Anacostia to truly make this a Region of Hope and Realization.
