Howard Theatre

Once called “DC’s Apollo Theatre,” the city’s oldest African-American venue fell into disrepair in the 1980s. The total project cost was $28,053,147 and included a creative mixed-financing structure. DCHA allocated roughly $11.5 million in NMTC funds to revitalize this historic venue that highlights the rich history of American legends while offering a new space for a new generation. This freshly restored 34,000 square-foot theatre seats 600 and will accommodate 1,000 people standing. The new façade brings back the building’s circa 1941 appearance. This redevelopment revived the Shaw community and generated tourism, tax revenues, and jobs.
