The District of Columbia Housing Authority has launched the 10th Annual Gift of Love holiday campaign. The Gift of Love campaign is a Christmas project that encourages DCHA employees, landlords and community partners to purchase needed gift items for children and families under significant economic hardship. Since its inception in 2003 the program has provided Christmas gifts for approximately 2,350 public housing and HCVP children.

How the Program Works
Based on request, donors select or are partnered with a child or children. Once paired, the donor will receive the name, age, gender, clothing and shoe size, list of needs and a list of wishes for each child. From the list, the donor chooses to purchase any or all of the items on the needs and or wish list or substitute items that they feel the child will enjoy.

The Gift of Love Fellowship
Each year the families are invited to a gift giving fellowship where at designated times, families come to DCHA Headquarters to pick-up their gifts. During this celebration the children take pictures with Santa. Each child is also allowed to select one gift of his/her choice and a new book from Santa’s Sack. (Santa’s sack is filled with toys donated from our annual toy drive.)

All donors are invited to attend the fellowship in order to meet and share expressions of appreciation.

Make a Difference
In the rush of the holiday, it can be difficult to find time to remember families less fortunate than your own. By participating in the Gift of Love Program, you can provide children with gifts that they might otherwise not receive nor be able to afford.

How to get Involved

  • Sponsor a child
  • Organize a Toy Drive (new unwrapped toys)
  • Organize a Book Drive (new books only)
  • Make a donation (checks should be made payable to Community Vision, Inc)
  • Volunteer to help

Those interested in supporting the program should contact GiftofLove@dchousing.org or 202-535-2902.
