Several young women from District of Columbia Housing Authority communities recently attended a STEM Expo held at Morgan State University.

The expo, held on November 9, had more than 50 exhibitors including Morgan State partner federal laboratories: Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Naval Warfare Center Carderock Division (NWCCD), Marine Corps System Command (MCSC), United States Naval Academy (USNA) and Chemical Biological Center(CBC). Many of these laboratories offer internship applications for high school or undergraduate students.

The young women, who participate in DCHA's STEM Program through the Office of Resident Services, were sent to different areas of the event based on their grade level. The ATLAS Conference was for high school students while the Institute for Transportation Engineers workshop and Drop Anywhere Labs, which featured the latest technology in touchscreens and virtual reality, for middle school students. Elementary students went to the Hurt Gymnasium for the robotics competition.

All of the students joined to engage in hands-on activities with the more than 50 exhibitors in the ballroom area of Gilliam Concert Hall. There they worked on projects, such as mixing chemicals to create foam, operating miniature microscopes, sparking fun--a technique to create electronic lighting, and 3-D drawing, among other activities.
