Some 2,000 warm, winter coats were distributed to District of Columbia Housing Authority families and individuals during the agency’s first ever coat giveaway.

Macy’s and Clothes4Souls donated 1,200 winter coats to the authority to give to families as part of the agency’s Gift of Love initiative. Clothes4Souls is a Nashville-based non-profit and a division of Soles4Souls, Macy’s exclusive non-profit. Additional coats were donated by DCHA and the Children’s Foundation.

“Thanks to Macy’s, Clothes4Souls, and the Children’s Foundation, 2,000 of DCHA’s customers will enjoy a much warmer winter this year,” said DCHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett. “These coats will truly make an impact on the lives of our customers and is the essence of this season of giving.”

The all-day event, held December 19 at the community building at Capitol Riverfront, had families streaming in to pick up their coats and enjoy hot chocolate.

Each year since 2003, the District of Columbia Housing Authority has helped thousands of children enjoy the holidays. The Gift of Love initiative offers DCHA employees and partner organizations the opportunity to provide clothes, toys, books, and other gifts to brighten the holiday season for children. This year DCHA partnered with A Wider Circle, a local non-profit organization to serve 7,500 children for its signature event on December 18.

Combined with the efforts from other federal and local organizations, such as A Wider Circle, the U.S. Coast Guard, and D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, DCHA will be able to serve a total of some 9,500 children throughout the community during the entire Gift of Love season.

Macy’s, through its 2018 “The Big Give Back: Buy a Coat and We’ll Donate One” campaign, donated 35,000 brand new coats nationwide to Clothes4Souls. This is the sixth year of the partnership between Macy’s and Clothes4Souls, resulting in a total of 235,000 coats distributed nationwide since 2013, with a retail value of more than $9.4 million.
