The District of Columbia Housing Authority and A Wider Circle served 7,500 children at this year’s signature Gift of Love celebration—the largest number of children in the event’s 15-year history.

Each year since 2003, DCHA has helped thousands of children enjoy the holidays. The Gift of Love initiative offers DCHA employees and partner organizations the opportunity to provide clothes, toys, books, and other gifts to brighten the holiday season for children.

“The joy of watching parents and children picking out gifts and books is truly amazing. I’m so pleased DCHA can do a little more for our customers during this special season,” said DCHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett. “Our staff and community partners helped us reach this goal in the true spirit of the holidays.”

The all-day signature event, held December 18 at the community building in Capitol Riverfront, featured parents and children picking out gifts and books to put under the tree. Santa and Mrs. Claus were also on hand to get last-minute requests from the children and photos for the parents.

Combined with the efforts from other federal and local organizations, such as the U.S. Coast Guard and D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, DCHA will be able to serve a total of some 9,500 children throughout the community during the entire Gift of Love season, including a coat distribution sponsored by Macy’s and Clothes4Souls on December 19.
