More than 100 youth left it all on the court the weekend of June 28 when free throws, jump shots, and other amazing displays of athleticism and sportsmanship were on display at the District of Columbia Housing Authority Housing Choice Voucher Program’s Fourth Annual Basketball Tournament and Life Skills Event.

And all the major highlights were captured on film here.

For the past four years, DCHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program has used basketball as a vehicle to inspire and positively engage youth by reinforcing team building skills through sportsmanship, providing educational opportunities, and offering life skills workshops. HCVP views sports as a vehicle to build communities.

The star-studded event, held at Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School, was the agency’s largest tournament yet for youth participants, ages 8 to 16, and community partners, such as the United Negro College Fund, Omega Phi Psi, and WKYS 93.9 FM, among others.

The goal of DCHA and HCVP is to go beyond just providing housing vouchers to empower DCHA clients and highlight the 50,000 District residents it serves as vital community participants. Topics discussed in the life skills workshops included staying fit, dressing for success, financial literacy, critical decision making, sexual awareness, college preparation, leadership characteristics, and preventing bullying.
