On Saturday, December 22, 319 children received toys and books from DCHA employees and friends through the Gift of Love program, DCHA’s annual holiday celebration. The “Gift of Love” campaign gives DCHA employees and friends the opportunity to support families who are under significant economic hardship by purchasing needed gift items for children.

In late November, sponsors selected ornaments with each child’s “Wish” and “Need” list. When families came to the SW Family Enhancement Center located at Greenleaf Gardens on Saturday, they had their pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus (a.k.a. Charles Smith a.k.a. Dorothea Roundtree). While visiting with Santa, children were able to select a gift of their choice from Santa’s Sack in addition to their specifically requested gifts which were wrapped for opening Christmas Day. While they waited their turns, kids had an opportunity to get their faces painted and get a specially designed balloon.

For the 6th year in a row, each child was also able to select a new reading book of their choice. The gifts received included but are not limited to winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, boots and shoes, school uniforms, pajamas and underwear. The majority of the children received clothing. In addition to toys, children received books, video game systems, I-pods, e-readers, leap frog learning pads, board games, sporting equipment, remote control cars, stuffed animals, dolls & dollhouses, video games, and gift cards ranging in value $25-$100. Several children received laptop computers and thirty children received bicycles.

Thanks to everyone who served as a sponsor, donated a toy or gift, or volunteered in some way to help make the program a success.
